🔒 Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 24, 2026

This privacy policy explains what information CalorieDetails.com collects from visitors and registered users, how we use it, which third-party services receive data from our site, your rights regarding your personal information, and how to contact us with questions or requests.

CalorieDetails.com is operated by Dominic Acito. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact [email protected].

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide directly

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored as a one-way hash, never in plain text). When you use our food tracking, exercise tracking, and meal planning tools, we store the information you log — foods consumed, exercises performed, dates, quantities, and any notes you add. When you use our calculators, the values you enter (weight, height, age, activity level) are processed to produce results but are not stored unless you choose to save them to your account.

When you contact us by email or use the AI Food Tracker's natural-language input, we receive the contents of those messages.

Information collected automatically

When you visit any page on our site, we automatically receive standard server log information including your IP address, browser type, operating system, the page you visited, the page you came from, and the time of your visit. We use this information for security, troubleshooting, and aggregate analytics. We do not attempt to identify individual visitors from this data.

What we do not collect

We do not collect government identifiers, payment card numbers, biometric data, precise geolocation, or audio/video recordings. CalorieDetails.com does not charge users for any service, so we do not process payment information.

2. How We Use Your Information

We process the information described above for these specific purposes:

  • Providing the service — running your account, displaying your tracked foods and exercises, generating calculator results, sending password reset emails
  • Improving the site — analyzing aggregate usage patterns to understand which features are useful and which need work
  • Security — detecting suspicious activity, preventing abuse, protecting accounts
  • Legal compliance — responding to lawful requests from authorities, enforcing our terms, defending against legal claims
  • Communication — responding to emails you send us

We do not use your data for advertising profile building, sell your data to third parties, or use the contents of your food logs for any purpose other than displaying them back to you.

3. Third-Party Services and Data Sharing

CalorieDetails.com uses several third-party services to operate. These services may receive certain information about your visits to comply with their function. We list every third-party processor that has access to user-related data below:

Service Purpose What it receives
Google Analytics (Google LLC) Aggregate site usage statistics IP address (anonymized where supported), page views, device info, referring pages
Google AdSense (Google LLC) Display advertising Ad-related cookies, IP, page context. See Google's privacy policy.
Microsoft UET (Microsoft Corp.) Bing Ads conversion tracking IP, browser info, conversion events
Pinterest Tag (Pinterest, Inc.) Pinterest conversion tracking IP, browser info, page events
Anthropic API (Anthropic, PBC) AI-generated food summaries and AI Food Tracker Anonymized food data; AI Tracker queries you submit. No account identifiers are sent.
Termly (Termly, Inc.) Data subject request management Information you submit through the data request form

We do not sell or rent personal information to third parties. We may disclose information if required by law (subpoena, court order, or government request), to protect our rights or the safety of users, or in connection with a business transition (sale, merger, or acquisition). If a business transition occurs, you will be notified before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

4. AI-Generated Content

CalorieDetails.com uses Anthropic's Claude AI for two specific features:

  • Food page Q&A. Short answers like "Is this food good for weight loss?" displayed on individual food pages are AI-generated based on the food's nutritional data. No user-specific information is involved — these answers are generated once per food and shown to all visitors.
  • AI Food Tracker. When you type a meal description in natural language (e.g., "I had a turkey sandwich and an apple"), the text is sent to Anthropic's API to identify the foods. Anthropic processes this request and returns the structured result; per Anthropic's commercial terms, API inputs are not used to train their models.

AI-generated information on this site is not a substitute for professional medical, dietary, or nutritional advice. We disclose all AI-generated content as such.

5. Cookies and Tracking Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies for several purposes. These fall into three categories:

  • Strictly necessary cookies — used for authentication (keeping you logged in), security (CSRF protection), and basic site functionality. These cannot be disabled if you want to use account features.
  • Analytics cookies — used by Google Analytics to understand aggregate site usage. You can opt out via the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • Advertising cookies — used by Google AdSense, Microsoft UET, and Pinterest Tag to display relevant ads and measure conversions. You can opt out at aboutads.info/choices or youradchoices.com.

Most browsers let you block cookies, delete existing cookies, or be alerted before cookies are stored. Refer to your browser's help documentation for specific instructions. Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies will prevent account features from working.

6. Data Retention

We retain different categories of data for different periods:

  • Account data (email, password hash) — retained as long as your account is active. Deleted within 30 days of account deletion request.
  • Tracked data (food logs, exercise logs, meal plans) — retained for the lifetime of your account so you can access your history. Deleted with your account.
  • Server logs (IP, user-agent, page accessed) — retained for approximately 90 days for security and troubleshooting, then deleted or anonymized.
  • Analytics data — retention controlled by Google Analytics settings. Currently set to 14 months for individual data; aggregate data retained longer.
  • Email correspondence — retained for as long as needed to address your inquiry, then archived or deleted.

7. Data Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), password hashing, restricted access to production systems, and routine security updates. No system is perfectly secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a data breach affecting your information, we will notify affected users and applicable authorities as required by law.

8. Your Privacy Rights

Regardless of where you live, you have these rights on CalorieDetails.com:

  • Access your data — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct your data — update inaccurate information through your account settings or by email
  • Delete your data — request deletion of your account and associated data
  • Export your data — request a machine-readable copy of your tracked data
  • Object to processing — opt out of analytics and advertising cookies as described in Section 5

To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected] or use our data subject request form. We will respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling sensitive requests.

9. Region-Specific Rights

European Union, United Kingdom, and EEA

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and UK GDPR, you have the rights listed above plus the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. Our legal bases for processing your data are: consent (for optional analytics and advertising cookies), contract (for providing the service you signed up for), legitimate interest (for security, fraud prevention, and aggregate analytics), and legal obligation (for responding to lawful requests).

CalorieDetails.com is operated from the United States. When you use the site from the EU or UK, your information is transferred to and processed in the US. We rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses where applicable.

California (CCPA / CPRA)

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act and California Privacy Rights Act, California residents have the rights to know, correct, delete, and limit the use of sensitive personal information, plus the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. CalorieDetails.com does not sell personal information. We share certain technical information with advertising partners (Google AdSense, Microsoft UET, Pinterest) — under CCPA/CPRA this may be considered "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can opt out by adjusting your cookie preferences and using the industry opt-out mechanisms linked in Section 5. We do not process sensitive personal information as defined under CPRA.

Other US states

Residents of Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, Iowa, Tennessee, and Delaware, and any other US states with comprehensive privacy laws now in effect, have substantially similar rights to those described above under their respective laws. Email [email protected] to exercise these rights.

Canada

Under PIPEDA and applicable provincial privacy laws, Canadian users have access, correction, and complaint rights similar to those described above. You may contact us using the email above, or contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

10. Children's Privacy

CalorieDetails.com is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact [email protected] and we will delete the information. For users between 13 and 18, some features (such as calorie tracking and BMI calculation) may be inappropriate without medical guidance; we recommend involving a parent, guardian, or healthcare professional.

11. Do Not Track

Some browsers offer a "Do Not Track" (DNT) setting. There is no consistent industry standard for how websites should respond to DNT signals, and CalorieDetails.com does not currently respond to DNT signals. We do honor opt-outs through the industry-standard mechanisms linked in Section 5 and through the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal where applicable.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time as our services evolve and as privacy laws change. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, for significant changes affecting how we process your data, notify registered users by email or by a notice on the site. The current version is always available at this URL.
