Sweeteners

Honey vs Sugar: Nutrition Comparison

Honey and white sugar are the two most common sweeteners and are frequently compared for their health implications. Both are primarily composed of sugars — honey contains fructose and glucose in similar ratios to table sugar, with slightly more calories per tablespoon due to its higher density. Honey contains trace amounts of antioxidants, enzymes, and antimicrobial compounds not found in refined sugar, and raw honey in particular has some evidence for anti-inflammatory properties. However the amounts of these beneficial compounds in typical serving sizes are small. From a blood sugar perspective, both spike glucose similarly. Neither should be consumed in large quantities. If choosing between them, honey offers marginally more nutritional complexity, but both should be used sparingly.
